Recent progress from OHSAS 18001 to ISO 45001

Since ISO (International Standardization Organization) finally agreed to incorporate OHSAS 18001 into formal ISO Standard and renamed it as ISO 45001 in middle 2013, PC 283 Team has made a plan of Working Draft version in the first meeting in October 2013; a second meeting was soon held in April 2014, no complete conclusion about Working Draft version was achieved, Working Draft will be further discussed by members to decide whether to accept it as the Committee Draft version or not; if accepted, it will be published in August.

According to the latest progress mentioned in IAF midterm meeting, the Commission has established the follow-up drafting plan of ISO 45001:2016 Standard as follows:
•ISO / DIS 45001 (First Draft International Standard) will be published in April 2015;
•ISO / FDIS 45001 (Final Draft International Standard) will be published in April 2016;
•ISO 45001 is expected to complete in September 2016.

With the development of ISO 45001, the part for OHSAS 18001 Standard has not changed; however, after the release of ISO 45001, OHSAS 18001 Standard can be replaced by ISO 45001. By then, 127 countries in the world will face the renewal of more than 100,000 certificates; this will also be an important issue faced by all organizations applying for OHSAS 18001.

According to the survey, there are about 45 countries using the structure of OHSAS 18001 Standard to manage their occupation, health and safety system, other standards similar to OHSMS Standard include Australia / New Zealand AS / NZ 4801, China GB/T28001 and the United States ANSI Z10 Standard, etc. Although these standards are applied to individual countries, they are not universal, so that ISO international standard finally comes into being under the expectation of all walks of life.

However, the conversion from OHSAS 18001 to ISO 45001 is not mandatory, so the problems about the effectiveness of the certificate during transition period (such as ISO 9001 or ISO 14001 has a three-year transition period) deeply concerned by the quality control personnel do not exist in accordance with the current planning.

WCCQC always keeps close track of the developing standard, and takes objective observation position, if you have any questions and comments about the developing tendency of OHSAS 18001 International Standard or ISO 45001, you are welcome to contact us. With the release of the new standard, WCCQC will hold free seminars in various regions. To avoid missing information, you are welcome to join our newsletter.
