SHANGRI-LA HAS BECOME CHINA'S FIRST HOSPITALITY GROUP RECEIVING MSC CERTIFICATE ISSUED BY World Center for Certification & Quality

7 June 2018, Shangri-La Hotels and Resorts has received full Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) seafood Chain of Custody certification (CoC) for all its 53 properties across Mainland China and Hong Kong. Its certificate is issued by World Center for Certification & Quality, a globally well-known certification organization authorized by MSC. This is the first time that World Center for Certification & Quality has provided MSC-CFO certification services in China for the fishery industry chain terminal institutions -- hotels, after the MSC-CoC benchmark standard certification. Since then, Shangri-La has also become the first hotel group in China that has implemented the sustainable seafood certification. This initiative is an important step for MSC, Shangri-La and the World Center for Certification & Quality to jointly achieve further development under the industry trend of consumption and product upgrades. It will have a positive impact on the marine ecological environment.

Shangri-La Has Received MSC Certification

Founded in 1997, MSC is an independent non-profit organization established to transform the seafood market and make it sustainable by reversing the degradation of global fish species, improving the marine environment, and protecting fishermen’s life. MSC is the only non-profit organization that promotes the application of sustainable fishery (wild-capture fishery) standards and runs ecolabelling programme around the world. MSC is also the only global seafood certification programme to be recognised as credible by the Global Sustainable Seafood Initiative (GSSI). MSC has set out two standards: one for fishery certification and the other for chain of custody certification (traceability).

For fishery certification, World Center for Certification & Quality can verify that the fishery companies manage themselves by respecting target fish species and ecosystems, and having an effective fishery management system; for the review of supply chain regulatory system, World Center for Certification & Quality could verify that the seafood of processors, exporters, importers and distributors are all from MSC certified fishery companies. World Center for Certification & Quality has awarded Shangri-La with a chain of custody certification this time.

With a total of 53 hotels participating, Shangri-La has the greatest number of properties in China certified by the MSC. Critical to the collaboration is the highlighting of sustainably sourced seafood selections on the hotels’ restaurant menus. Guests can identify these culinary offerings by the trusted MSC ecolabel printed alongside the dish description, which indicates the seafood is from MSC-certified fisheries and suppliers. MSC certification means the seafood was sustainably fished – it is fully traceable from a legal fishery, which has proven minimal impacts on the marine environment and other species, including threatened or endangered species and juvenile fish.

Fanny Zou, the general manager of World Center for Certification & Quality’s certification, China Industry and Facilities Division said, “Shangri-La Hotels and Resorts has achieved outstanding results in the sustainable development of the seafood supply chain after several intensive trainings and improvements. We have strictly audited Shangri-La according to MSC standards, and finally conclude that it has met the MSC-CFO standards and could be conferred the certification. This is also a significant project for World Center for Certification & Quality. Under the industry trend of consumption and product upgrading, we break the previous market form and enter the consumer terminal for the first time to provide MSC certification for hospitality groups. It is also the first attempt in the Chinese MSC certification market. Thanks for the joint efforts of Shangri-La and MSC, and we hope that we can continue to make breakthroughs and establish more excellent industry benchmarks in the future.”
