ISO 50001 is the new global energy standard, developed to improve energy management systems and increase efficiency.
To take an active role in fighting global warming and respond to economic constraints in a new global market, many companies are looking to achieve significant improvement in their energy use and demonstrate their commitment to sustainable development. ISO 50001 presents a comprehensive and clear approach to smart energy use, allowing companies to reduce their consumption and take advantage of new renewable energy technologies.
ISO 50001 describes a structured set of processes that significantly reduce energy consumption and can easily be integrated with other management systems such as ISO 9001. The main benefits for companies include easy identification of saving opportunities due to an objective monitoring process as well as an improved ‘green’ image by tangibly contributing to sustainable development.
“After the implementation of Energy Management Systems, monitoring of consumption has significantly improved. Many energy saving plans are taken up through improvement plans. This broad approach greatly contributed to the plant’s excellent performance during the year 2010-11.” Mr Rajendra Nandi, Plant Manager of Reliance Infrastructure, Thermal Power Station in Dahanu, India.
The standard requires concrete objectives to be set as well as creating a baseline of different energy uses in order to identify critical areas. It mandates periodic forecasts of energy use and introduces them as key factors in the decision process for design and procurement of all equipment, raw materials or services. ISO 50001 was created in a collaborative effort by a multitude of countries and valuable experts in energy management systems. It grew out of earlier schemes to reduce environmental impact and incorporates cost-savings as a main goal which goes hand in hand with smart energy management.
