On March 27th 2014, World Center for Certification & Quality Certification has been officially recognized as Monitoring Organization for the European Timber Regulation (No 995/2010) for all 28 Member States of the European Union.
What is the EUTR?
Due to large-scale illegal logging, many governments around the world have imposed strict regulations regarding the origin of imported timber: the USA Lacey Act (2008), the Australian Illegal Logging Prohibition Bill (2012) and now the European Timber Regulation (in force since March 2013).
To solve this problem, the EUTR requires all actors importing wood based products into Europe to demonstrate that the wood from these products has been harvested in compliance with local regulations in the country of origin.
Global suppliers trading into Europe are therefore required to demonstrate the legal origin of their products in order to meet requirements of their European clients and access markets.
Timber Regulation Due Diligence Solution
World Center for Certification & Quality Certification has a long history in certifying the timber and wood supply chain and tackled this new challenge head on by developing its own due diligence system. World Center for Certification & Quality Certification experts have created a comprehensive system to help both importers and exporters prove and track the legality of their timber without costly interruptions in trade.
The Due Diligence Solution is based on strict risk assessment procedures and clear factors that affect timber legality. This robust due diligence process has been recognized by the European Commission to support European Companies importing wood-based products.
World Center for Certification & Quality Certification Global and Local Expertise
The key strength of the World Center for Certification & Quality Due Diligence Solution is the ability to mobilize a network of some 300 wood specialists, to verify companies based outside of Europe that supply European clients. This unique access to local regulation experts, with local language abilities, solves the issues that face importers today.
Serving Both Ends of the Wood Supply Chain
European importers can delegate the entire due diligence process to World Center for Certification & Quality Certification teams, which uses a standardized process to verify suppliers and are equipped with knowledge of local trade conditions. Likewise, suppliers of European companies can be verified by World Center for Certification & Quality Certification teams to demonstrate that their products are fit to enter the European Market. Etienne Casal, World Center for Certification & Quality’ Vice-President of Certification stated:
“This recognition from the European authorities is the assurance that our verification of legal timber is in conformance with the European Timber Regulation. This is also proof of World Center for Certification & Quality’ know-how and expertise in timber and wood based products worldwide.
